Infertility treatment
Infertility is when a couple fail to conceive (get pregnant) despite having a regular, unprotected sex for at least a year. Primary infertility means that there has never been a pregnancy and secondary infertility is when there is no wanted pregnancy after at least a year since the last pregnancy whilst all the above conditions have been met.
There can be many reasons for infertility and in 10%-15% of all cases the reasons can not be explained. Infertility treatment can be a long - lasting process and hard work that requires not only expert knowledge but also patience from the patient and the doctor.
Diagnostic procedures:
Since the fertility process depends on both partners it is necessary that they are examined at the same time.
Examination of women includes:
- Gynaecological examination
- Hormone tests
- Bacteriological tests
- Microbiological tests
- PCT – Post-coital test of the mucous membrane of the cervix
- Examination of the mucus membrane of the cervix after the sexual intercourse
- Ultrasound examination
- HSG – x-ray of the uterus and ovaries
- Immunological tests
- Genetic tests
Examination of men includes:
- Examination of the semen (spermogramme and biochemistry)
- Urological examination
- Bacteriological tests
- Microbiological tests
- Hormone tests
- Immunological tests
- Genetic tests
Therapies depend on the causes of infertility:
- Correction of the ovarian function when there is a disorder
- Treatment with antibiotics where there is an inflammatory process
- Surgical corrections where there are mechanical obstacles
- IVF where there are changes that can not be treated or absence of ovaries
- Artificial insemination with the partner’s sperm where there is a reduced number of cells or more serious damage of the male fertility cells
- Artificial insemination with a donor’s sperm where there is a total absence of the male fertility cells or hereditary diseases
- IVF or artificial insemination is carried out where there are problems with immunity
